Fresh Produce jobs at Fruit Recruit: How to prepare for redundancy

May 25th, 2009

Looking back at the first quarter of 2009 it seems worthwhile to guide candidates preparing themselves for possible redundancies. The economic downturn hasn´t reached the bottom yet (or has it?) so the following tips might be helpfull.

1. Don’t wait for it to happen. Plot out ahead of time what you should say to your boss or HR department who gives you the news and what you will ask for.
2. Employees who are being fired can do little about saving their jobs but very much when negotiating the terms of their departure. Whatever the set policy, try to bargain for better terms, In some companies, you might negotiate for larger settlement payments, especially if you are older than 40. Some companies have a practice of not offering you outright what they are prepared to give. They are willing to kick in more, figuring that it’s a good thing if you leave feeling that you have “won” something from the company.
3. There’s no time like the present to take a long and critical look at your cv. Does it fully and adequately describe the contemporary you? Bring it up to date with the aid of a couple of the good books on the market about writing an effective résumé. Put the finished product in your top desk drawer, ready for you to pull it out at a moment’s notice.
4. Even if you have not been fired, it’s smart to visit your human resources office and ask for an estimated full accounting of the worth of your accumulated company assets, such as the value of your pension, if any. That will help you negotiate over severance and other benefits if you are laid off. Find out what the size of your package is scheduled to be.
5. Make sure you have a backup of any personal files that you store on a company computer. If they are clearly nonconfidential, you might be wise to take them home for valuable future reference.
6. Work hard to improve and expand your network of mentors, colleagues and sources. Some headhunters recommend that you build a list of about 25 people in your field – people at your level or higher – and call them every three to six months, just to say hello or perhaps discuss some industry issues. Aim to make connections with at least ten people both inside and outside your company. Call them at least once a month to exchange nonconfidential information.
7. Figure out ahead of time how to control your emotions when you are called in to be fired. No matter how well you plan it, your emotions – grief, anger, etc. – are most likely to be stronger than you anticipate. Don’t hurl insults at the boss who actually does the firing, who is probably more uncomfortable than you are. Besides, you may encounter that person on some job in the future, where you may want to gain an ally.

Fresh Produce Recruitment @ Fruit Recruit: produce jobs

February 28th, 2009

Fruit Recruit, the “Fresh Produce Only” Recruiters, keeps a close look at the economy in the EU zone. While at Fruit Logistica in Berlin from Feb 6 to Feb 9, Fruit Recruiters observed more recruitment companies participating than in previous years, indicating an increased competition for a slice of the reduced “recruitment fee pie” in Fresh Produce. To make things worse, the recession in the UK is now a fact:

Bleak outlook for UK recruitment services underlined
Britain’s services sector is no better placed to withstand the effects of a contracting economy than its manufacturing sector, data show. Slumping demand is forcing cuts in investment, leading to rapid job losses.

According to the CBI’s quarterly survey of the services sector released today, February saw intensifying rates of decline in employment levels, with jobs being shed at the fastest rate in the 10 years since the survey was launched. Equally rapid was the drop in profits and the value and volume of business.

The employers’ group survey fills out a picture sketched yesterday by data from the Office for National Statistics that showed the services sector contracting faster in the three months to December, with distribution, particularly in the motor trades and wholesale businesses, leading the way.

The latest data, put together, belie any suggestion that the severity of a recession largely investment-led is likely to spare the services sector, which may be less dependent on capital expenditure than manufacturing.

According to data from the ONS, the Index of Services, which measures activities from distribution to financial services, increased the speed of its decline in the three months to December. Overall, the index fell 0.9 per cent in that period, compared with a 0.5 per cent drop in the three months to November.

The ONS data also reflect the rising pace of job losses in one component of its index, that of business services and finance. In December alone output there decreased by 0.2 per cent, reflecting mostly a drop in labour recruitment and management consultancy.

“The effects of a global recession are being keenly felt by services firms,” said Ian McCafferty, the CBI’s chief economic adviser. “Consumers are clearly reining back their discretionary spending – postponing holidays and spending less on leisure activities and personal care.” The CBI’s survey, like the ONS data, highlights the contraction in the demand for business services such as the provision of temporary office staff, advertising and legal advice.

The ONS data show that even government and other services contracted in the three months to December, falling 0.4 per cent, with the biggest weakness in recreation, sewerage and waste disposal. Local authorities could lose an estimated £6bn this year as developers shelve plans for development that would have required them to pay fees for planning permission.

Both the ONS data and CBI survey underscore weakness in the economy and show how consumerfacing businesses are following the same downward trend as manufacturing. The Index of Services shows that in the distribution category, motor trade retail shows a contraction of 6.8 per cent in the three months to December, while wholesale distribution – selling to businesses – fell 5.6 per cent.

But the data contain a few unexpected nuggets. Financial intermediation, which includes most banking activities, rose 0.7 per cent, despite data showing lending activity falling sharply for most of the year.

Produce Recruitment: Less Produce jobs as Banking slump is spreading

February 1st, 2009

During December 2008 and January 2009 high profile headhunters such as Heidrick & Struggles and Korn/Ferry have announced falling reveneu and declining headcounts. Banks and Housebuilders, two big sources of reveneu for recruitment groups, are shedding staff by the tens of thousands while most other companies are being cautious about taking on commitments. On top of this candidates have also grown more wary about changing jobs. Conclusion: searches take longer and there are fewer jobs to fill, cutting deep into completion fees. If this were not bad enough, some companies are now taking 90 days to pay their bills instead of the customary 30.
Fruit Recruit is pro-actively approaching its existing client base and has adapted search fees from 15% to 12%. Co-Founder Joep Maussen: “When faced with adverse market conditions the best decisions we can make are based on adapting to these changed market conditions. We now have completed our first investment in state of the art Executive Search software while expanding our services to India. Our business model is based on three pilars sustaining growth plans in 2009 and beyond: Firstly, we operate an EDLC (Every Day Low Cost) concept, allowing us to generate above average net margins while charging our clients below average search fees. Secondly, we are a boutique search company dedicated exclusively to the international Fresh Produce industry. And last but not least, all our recruiters have a Fresh Produce background allowing us to quickly grasp what our clients need when they turn to us for recruitment.”
